Bringing DH-ready damping to XC
The feedback on the first generation of Samurai forks was loud and clear: riders wanted a lockout on their XC forks. This became the primary goal when revisiting the cartridge for the Samurai series.
We used our proven Opt Damper from the gravity lineup as a template. This closed-bladder damper has earned its reputation in demanding downhill applications, and our challenge was to translate that performance into a much smaller package. By scaling the Opt Damper down into a compact, lightweight format, we were able to fit it into the Samurai XC while preserving its core damping characteristics—and at the same time integrate a true 3-position lockout.
The three modes are designed for real riding conditions:
- Road delivers a very firm, highly efficient lockout ideal for smooth asphalt (efficiency first, comfort second);
- Gravel offers a softer lockout for mixed terrain;
- DH fully opens the damper for maximum sensitivity and control on descents.
The result is a Samurai XC fork that excels at classic cross-country duties, yet feels remarkably composed when the trail points downhill. It combines the efficiency expected from an XC fork with the plush, controlled ride quality of a gravity-inspired damper.
The damper is fitted as standard in both the Samurai XC 29″ and Samurai XC 32″ models. It cannot be retrofitted to earlier generations of Samurai forks.
